Background of the Study

Leadership is a critical determinant of organizational success, particularly in strategic decision-making processes. Effective leadership styles foster collaboration, innovation, and informed decision-making, while poor leadership can hinder organizational progress (Northouse, 2024).

Educational institutions in Adamawa State are faced with numerous challenges, including resource constraints, quality assurance, and adapting to technological advancements in education. Leadership styles in these institutions play a pivotal role in addressing these challenges and ensuring that strategic decisions align with organizational goals (Bala & Ahmed, 2023).

This study explores the impact of leadership styles on strategic decision-making in educational institutions, focusing on their role in shaping policies, resource allocation, and overall institutional effectiveness.

Statement of the Problem

Educational institutions in Adamawa State struggle with effective strategic decision-making due to leadership challenges such as authoritarian tendencies, lack of inclusiveness, and resistance to change. These issues have resulted in suboptimal policies, inefficient resource utilization, and declining performance (Usman et al., 2025).

Despite the importance of leadership styles in strategic decision-making, limited research has been conducted within the educational sector in Adamawa State. This study addresses this gap by investigating the effect of leadership styles on decision-making processes in these institutions.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To examine the relationship between leadership styles and strategic decision-making in educational institutions in Adamawa State.
  2. To identify the leadership styles prevalent in these institutions.
  3. To assess the challenges faced by leaders in implementing strategic decisions.

Research Questions

  1. What is the relationship between leadership styles and strategic decision-making in educational institutions?
  2. What leadership styles are most common in educational institutions in Adamawa State?
  3. What challenges do leaders face in implementing strategic decisions?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Leadership styles significantly influence strategic decision-making in educational institutions.
  2. Transformational leadership positively impacts the effectiveness of strategic decision-making.
  3. Leadership challenges negatively affect the implementation of strategic decisions.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study focuses on educational institutions in Adamawa State, from 2023 to 2025, examining how leadership styles influence strategic decision-making. It excludes institutions outside Adamawa State and other sectors. Limitations include the subjective nature of leadership assessment and potential biases in respondents' perceptions.

Definitions of Terms

  • Strategic Decision-Making: The process of making long-term decisions that align with organizational goals and objectives.
